London: Heinemann, 1973. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. (London: William Heinemann Ltd. 1973). First UK Edition. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO JILL PATON WALSH. Publisher's aquamarine boards with gilt spine lettering. Inscribed by the Author to the front free end-paper: "For Jill/ (and all the Paton Walshs!)/ with love/ Penelope Lively". With a small ownership sticker of Jill Paton Walsh (1937-2020) to the front paste-down. The book is in VG condition with very slight fading to the extremities and softening to the spine tips. The D/W is near VG with minor wear at the spine tips and with a few marks to the back panel. The verso of the D/W has some evidence of damp-staining. The value of this copy is very much in the inscription by the Author. Winner of the annual Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, recognising the year's best children's book by a British subject. Photographs/scans available upon request.
