[London] : Printed for the Arundel society, 1854. 1st edition. Hardcover. Provenance: Bookplate of Charles Arthur Wynne Finch. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat dulled and rubbed as with age. Remains quite well-preserved overall. Physical description: 124 pages including 2 plates; 25 cm + 1 atlas of 38 plates (45 x 58 cm). Notes: Originally issued in three parts, part 1 being published in 1853, part 2 in 1854, and part 3 in 1860. These parts were bound in one volume in June, 1877, with title page as above.--cf. Summary: Scope and content: Ruskin's text was intended to accompany a volume of prints issued by the Arundel Society from 1853 and published in 1860 as Arena Chapel, Padua: a series of wood engravings from the frescoes of Giotto, illustrating the lives of the Virgin and our Saviour. The text and the prints describe the paintings executed by Giotto in the Cappella degli Scrovegni at Padua about 1305; which depict the lives of the Virgin and of Christ.
