About This Item

[Circa 1670-1674]: Giovanni. Battista Hacque/ Hacque, Johann Baptist (?), 1670. 1st Edition 1st Printing. No Binding. Very Good. Original Engraving, Circa 1672 , Engraved By J. J. Metger. Apparently A Leaf From A Collection Of Portraits. Part Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Johann Eberhard Nithard ( Spanish : Juan Everardo Nithard , Italian: Giovanni Everardo Cardinale Nitardo), 1607 -1681 (Was An Austrian Jesuit Priest, Tutor To The Children Of Ferdinand Iii Of Austria , Regent Of Spain From 1666 To 1669 And Created Cardinal In 1672 . From 1641 To 1646 Nithard Taughts Philosophy And Canon Law In Graz . He Was Then Chosen By The Emperor Ferdinand Iii Of Austria To Be The Tutor Of His Children Leopold And Marianne . It's The Turning Point Of His Life. In 1647 He Is Also Chaplain And Confessor Of Marianne, A Role He Keeps Even After The Marriage Of The Princess With Philip Iv Of Spain Two Years Later ( 1649 ). He Won The Trust Of His Royal Husband, Philip Iv, Who Appointed Him To A Series Of Commissions Aimed At Improving The Lot Of The People. Philip Iv Died In 1665 . His Son And Successor Charles Ii Being Only Four Years Old, Queen Marianne Became Regent Of The Kingdom. Unprepared For This Role, The Regent Turns More And More To Her Confessor For Advice. The Queen Gave Him Spanish Nationality (He Is Known Since Then As Nitardo ) And He Is Made Member Of The Council Of The Regency . It Is Clear That The Jesuit Nithard Became The Chief Political Adviser Of The Regent, And De Facto The Prime Minister Of The Kingdom. He Far Exceeded His Spiritual Role As A Confessor. The Queen Obtained From Pope Alexander Vii That Nithard Be Exempted From His Vows Of Jesuit So That He Can Be Appointed Inquisitor General Of Spain . The Rise Of Nithard Created Many Enemies For Him: He Remained A Stranger To The Spanish Nobility And, Moreover, A Descendant Of Lutheran Parents, Which Won Him No Friends In The High And Low Clergy Of Catholic Spain. Opposition And Jealousy Remained Discreet As Long As He Had The Favor Of The Queen. Moreover, Nithard Was A Good And Irreproachable Administrator. Don Juan Jose Of Austria , Illegitimate Son Of Philip Iv Tried To Obtain A Return To Favor With The Regent Through Nithard. Failing In His Company He Organizes A Campaign Against The Jesuit. A Civil War Threatened. Following The Intervention Of Pope Clement Ix (By His Nuncio) The Queen Agrees To Separate From Her Adviser. In 1669 Nithard Leaves For Exile In Rome, Where He Is Named Ambassador Of Spain (With Promise Of The Hat Cardinalice). The Spanish Ambassador Extraordinary Spends Most Of His Time Writing His Memoirs (21 Volumes) And Other Pious Works. He Was Appointed Titular Archbishop Of Edessa On November 16, 1671 And Created Cardinal In Pectore Soon After By Pope Clement X (February 22, 1672 ). He Wished To Return To Spain But Does Not Obtain Permission. It Seems That He Was Influential At The Conclave Of 1676 Which Elected Cardinal Benedetto Odescalchi Pope: Blessed Innocent Xi .
