The poet and critic James Rorty played an important role in Jeffers' achieving recognition as a poet. "...James Rorty brought [Tamar and Other Poems, 1924, Jeffers' third book] to the attention of Mark Van Doren. Enthusiastic reviews by Rorty, Van Doren, and others appeared. A demand sprang up; Jeffers returned the 450 unsold copies to the printer [in New York], who sold out the edition. Tamar is the first of the author's major works, and was instrumental in establishing him as one of the country's foremost poets...Give Your Heart to the Hawks is located in a place in time that was vanishing as it was written, as Highway One was being constructed at the time. Big Sur had been opened up to easy access from the north in 1932, and the remainder of the project would be completed in 1937, four years after the publication of this poem.
