Zurich: Fretz & Wasmuth Verlag, (1943).. Complete in two volumes. Original stiff tan self-wrappers. Volume 1: Corner bumps with small tears at head and foot of spine, some spots on spine and back cover, faint small pencil notation on front cover, some pencil notations in text. Volume 2: Area of dampstain on back cover and 6 rear leaves. Both volumes Good. Some years ago, when I called Hesse's bibliographer Joseph Mileck about these volumes, he informed me that he had not yet seen a wrappered set. We have since then seen only one other set come up for sale. The wrappered set is far harder to find than the hardbound set. Rare. Mileck, Volume 1, pp. 204-12. . Good. Stiff Wrappers. Erste Ausgabe. Synopsis

The Glass Bead Game is the last work and magnum opus of the German author Hermann Hesse. Begun in 1931 and published in Switzerland in 1943, after being rejected for publication in Germany, the book was mentioned in Hesse's citation for the 1946 Nobel Prize for Literature.
