Commencing with two essays on the Jews of the Middle Ages in which some generally held misconceptions of medieval Jewish history are dispelled, most of the chapters are devoted to the Jews of Italy, Spain and Portugal. They deal with such diverse subjects as religious disputations, persecutions and martyrdom, and Jewish luminaries and their contributions to the arts and sciences. The closing chapters, accompanied by 22 illustrations, are devoted to that masterpiece of medieval illuminating art, the famed Kennicott Bible.
