About This Item
Amsterdam: F.J. Weygand. Booklet: wraps, and slipcase of heavy card. Fine. N.d., circa 1830. An engraved card globe in six hand-colored sections which when manipulating the moving slide cords attached at the top and bottom will transform the pieces into a globe. Scarce, with only institutional copy appearing on OCLC First Search at Newberry. The accompany explanatory 10 page booklet, 18.5 by 12 cm, describes the earth, its axes, the equinoxes, the tropics, solstices, the continents, etc. It also contains two color plates addressing astronomy and the zodiac. The globe, 16 cm in height when flattened, 37 cm in circumference when fully formed, is in fine condition, with all strings present and the six segments attached to one another properly. We are reluctant to transform the flat pieces into the fully three dimensional globe less we incur and damage to the delicate piece, but one can clearly do this with care. There is trivial rubbing to the edges of the slipcase. Some light wear along the edge of the booklet, and some light rippling to its cover, with perhaps a few discreet water marks. Notwithstanding these minor imperfections, we would regard the globe and booklet are in fine condition.
