About This Item
Mamaroneck, New York: Paul P. Appel, 1977. Octavo. 311p. Originally, published in 1952 GO is generally recognized as the first Beat Generation novel. It appeared five years before On the Road and provides the first genuine picture of the Beats before they began their publishing career. His characters are based on graphic portrayals of Kerouac (called Pasternak) , Ginsberg (called Stofsky, Neal Cassady along with lost girls, junkies, thieves and hipsters. Essential for understanding the origin of the Beats by one who was one of them. His book became scarce immediately and was virtually suppressed since those who bought the rights to it felt they would face censorship issues. It captures what was the Beat scene in New York in a way that still reminds us of that world where conventional morals and lifestyle were not recognized but disregarded as relics of the past as consciousness and honesty was explored relentlessly by a young Kerouac and Ginsberg. Bound in red cloth, spine lettering gilt, bump to upper edge near head. A very nice copy in very nice unclipped dust jacket.
