First edition (No Additional Printings) of Buckley's first book in which he "demonstrates the secularist and collectivist impact of Yale education." It launched his career as a conservative commentator and critic. Four years later (1955) he began publishing the conservative journal National Review and for three decades was the host of the television program "Firing Line." In addition to his political works, he also wrote spy novels From the book's blurb on the rear flap: Buckley "believes that responsible men and women must energetically defend and encourage whatever values they cherish. He believes that any attempt to preserve our civilization which does not take into account the influencing of students is doomed to failure." Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 240 pages. The textblock is tight, bright and unmarked, except for a previous booksellers pencil notations at the top of the front flyleaf. Hardcover bound in blue cloth over boards with dulled gilt title on spine. Corners are sharp, spine has a little wear at the head and foot. Overall the book shows minimal shelf wear, however the front and back covers look as if they were wiped with a damp cloth at some point, leaving a matte, slightly milky finish for about 2/3rds of both covers. No foxing in this copy. Dust jacket is in VG- condition. There are small (about 1/4") chips at the top and bottom of each of the folds for the flaps and spine. The wear along the fold between the spine and the front panel is accentuated by the contrast of the worn fold on the dark blue background. Photo of a very young Bill Buckley on the back panel, along with his bio up through Yale. The jacket is now protected in an archival Bodart sleeve. The dust jacket is unclipped ($3.50).
