About This Item
New York: Paul B. Hoeber, 1926. Later printing. Frontispiece, separate title (copy of the second edition of 1828), woodcut illustrations throughout. Publisher's cloth, gilt decoration on front cover, spine with what appears to be water damage (but in tact). Uncut, a wide-margined copy. Bookplate of Edgar Frank Mauer and second ownership signature dated 1926. "This charming 'autobiography' tells the adventures of the famous gold-headed cane, successively in the possession of Radcliffe, Mead, Askew, William and David Pitcairn, and Baillie, and then retired to a glass case in the library of the Royal College of Physicians of London. Besides good biographies of the several owners of the cane, the book gives interesting information on the state of medicine in England in the eighteenth century" (G&M).
William MacMichael (1784-1839), English physician and scholar, was elected a Radcliffe traveling fellow in 1811, and he made several journeys through Russia, Turkey, the Danubian principalities, and Palestine.
Garrison & Morton, 6709.
