Hill comments about the importance of this book on "... the inception and history of the Pacific and Atlantic mail steamers, running from the East coast to California." From the Forward, "This volume on the ships to California from 1849 to 1869 evolved from a study of the propaganda hand stamps used by the steamship companies on the letters carried by their vessels.".
