Richard Lesley & Co, London, 1946. First Edition. Hardcover (Illustrated Cloth). Very Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Webster Murray. Bibliography, list of illustrations and introduction by author. The text is illustrated with nine coloured plates, including the frontispiece, by Webster Murray. Light blue coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured embossed decoration and titles to the front panel and backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, again by Webster Murray, with gold and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. This book is one of the few surviving Latin novels. "It is a highly amusing satire on the vices of the times. In The Golden Asse it is the matter, ready to hand for the taking, for a dozen elaborate romances, each one fresh as the day was devised, overflowing with the freakish humour of the writer." -- from the front fold over panel. Softening and rubbing of the backstrip edges with rubbing of the book corners. Very fine scattered foxing to the top edges of the book. Age toning of the textblock edges and pages with the end pages faintly spotted by foxing. Chipping chipping of the top dustwrapper corners and of the backstrip edges. Some small tears to the top dustwrapper edge and a small split to the lower left-hand corner of the front panel. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels; and, the rear panel shows a little handling marks and sunny. Very light browning and some foxing to the verso.
