About This Item

New York: Arno Press, 1969. first thus. hardcover. Book VG: spotting to boards and spine, foxing to endpapers, text clean, binding tight/DJ G: age toning, spine slightly sunned, edge wear, not clipped. 8vo 800pp. from front flap: "In medieval times the saints were heroes; everyone turned to some special saint for aid. Saint Margaret protected mothers in childbirth, Saint Genevieve cured the burning sickness, Saint Blaise the ills of the throat. Saint Cornelius guarded oxen, Saint Gall the hens, Saint Medard the vinyards. It was this lore of the saints that Jacobus de Voragine compiled for his most famous work, the Golden Legend. Unlike scientific biography these legends were further embellished by Jacobus from what were originally legendary sources. The Golden Legend is the folk-lore of the saints." #01924.
