About This Item
NY: Dodge, 1914. 2nd Edition . Hardcover. Good-/No Jacket. No author listed, publishing history very sketchy. 1900? Maybe, seems about right. I suspect this is a British produced text of Blackie(GB) original, same title, it does say printed in GB last page, but, Dodge NY copyright page, no date. Content/ illustrators imply it was originally GB product. Golden board edges are quite chippy, luckily the interior text, but for the occasional smudge is unmarked, no crayon no pencil. Boards have the odd ink spot. NOTE: addl research shows as follows: the Blackie appeared in GB as late as 1913, the US product, 1914. This one? Possible. . . This fits better with the ages of the illustrators. The text is done in part by noted British book designer Alice Talwin Morris (nee Marsh), while she is not credited her name and initials appear regularly. Also illustrations by Angusine Macgregor and Lillian Govey are present if only sprinkled through the book. Fortunately they signed some of theirs, given the style I theorize that Macgregor may have done some of the unsigned illustrated content. Work (B & W) by May Gladwin, Ethel Parkinson and Harry B. Neilson is also present. I will try to shoot some of the Macgregor and Govey for the books listing. It is worth noting that some of the content reflects the racial attitudes of a less enlghtened era, Binding sound. It should be noted that the book does not meet Mcbride's 1st statement for Dodge, though this might be nearly moot as the Great Britain version is almost surely prior.
