About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. Francis Palgrave's primary influence on the growth of literature was enclosed in his Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics, a collection of the most excellent verse in the linguistic built upon a diagram good and open, and kept with a flimsiness of emotions which cannot quite be outdone. This songbook is entertaining to hear with the family or friends. There is surely very much to recount into in these magnificent stanzas.

Francis Turner Palgrave was a critic, anthologist and poet. He was born in Great Yarmouth to Sir Francis Palgrave, the historian and his wife Elizabeth Turner, the daughter of the banker Dawson Turner. His brothers were William Gifford Palgrave, Inglis Palgrave and Reginald Palgrave. His younger days were spent at Yarmouth and at his father's home in Hampstead. When he was 14, he was taken as a male boarding school student to Charterhouse; and he went on trips widely in Italy and some parts of the world, he had a scholarship at Balliol College, Oxford. He then discontinued his university studies to work as an assistant private secretary to Gladstone, but went back, to Oxford the following year, and had a first lecture in Literae Humaniores. He also became a teacher of Exeter College, and joined the Education Department at Whitehall.

He took on the vice-principalship of Kneller Hall Training College at Twickenham. There he closely connected with Alfred Tennyson, and set the base of a lifetime camaraderie. When the training college was left, Francis went back to Whitehall and became an examiner in the Education Department, and finally as an assistant secretary. He married Cecil Grenville Milnes, the daughter of James Milnes-Gaskell. He thereafter stopped working in his career at the Education Department, and in the next year superseded John Campbell Shairp as a poetry professor at Oxford.
