Providence, R.I., Gorham Manufacturing Company, 1898; reprint Cranston, R.I., Owl at the Bridge, 2010. The game of golf was new to the United States when Gorham published this catalog of golf prizes in 1898. The St. Andrews Golf Club at Hastings-on-Hudson in New York, established in 1886, was the first permanent club; the first American book on golf was published in 1895. Gorham engaged the young William (Will) Bradley (1868-1962) as printer. The book is filled with delightful stories, a golf poem (The Links o' Innerleven) and a golf song. There is golf history and plugs for golf as a game that doesn't require athletic ability--"a good golfer depends more upon steadiness of nerve than upon muscular agility." The game is good for women as well as men and is growing so fast that there are nearly 75 golf clubs in the country (can you imagine!). Gorham golf-related products include match boxes (20), flasks, umbrella handles, and loving cups of various sizes and cost. Soft Cover. 52 pages, illustrations; 24.5 cm. Fine, new from publisher. Stock#46301x. Quantity purchases deeply discounted.
