Elmer Kelton has signed the half title page of this copy of his classic story of ranching in Texas - #1 in The Texas Tradition Series. 257 pp. Trade paperback is clean and crisp with light wear to wrapper. Rear panel has light scuffing. Spine has a little dark rubbing on very top portion and a small area in center, below title. A must-read for western lovers and for every one who loves writing with the ring of authenticity -- artful - and signed by Kelton.

Hewey Calloway is pretty much your typical Elmer Kelton protagonist--rootless, a drifter--one who gets into trouble without half trying. But when the chips are down, and he is needed, in this case to help his brother who had settled down and was raising a family, he does what needs to be done. Elmer Kelton creates mostly believable characters who act and behave the way a lot of people we know behave. That is what made him the author he was.
