About This Item
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1951. First American edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. First American edition (no statement as is correct for this publisher at that time). Hardcover in red cloth lettered and decorated in black. 215 pp. Illustrated with small drawings and diagrams. A tight, generally fine example in the orignal dust jacket, very good, price clipped and with a bit of shallow wear to the spine extremities and upper edges and a horzontal crease acrosss the lower rear panel. One of White's scarcest tuitles, the story of his training of a goshawk, a short-winged, powerful hawk considered by many falconers (both modern and medieval) as perhaps the finest and most courageous of hunters. This fascinating book is a day-to-day record of White's attempts to establish himself "Gos"'s eyes as an equal, a long, painful and emotionally wearing experience that sometimes involved the author's staying up night after night, talking to the bird, crooning to him, even reciting Shakespeare.
