Bultmann's Challenge to the Preacher Rudolf Bultmann claims to have produced a Gospel free of myth. This book is an attempt to evaluate his theology, with particular emphasis on its challenge to the preacher called today to present the Christian faith to a generation which regards its terminology as obscurantist. Professor Cairns pays special attention to Martin Heidegger who, Bultmann believes, has provided non-mythological and adequate concepts which can govern both theology and preaching. It is his own conviction, however, that no concepts are wholly adequate to describe the transcendent realities of revelation, and that we must therefore continue to use terms which are in part inadequate, though with consciousness of their inadequacy. He concludes with an outline of an alternative theory. The Church of Scotland has long been notable for its preaching.
