About This Item
227+[6 ad] pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's black-stamped yellow cloth to spine and cover in original jacket. Clipped signature laid in. (Firsts Volume 14, number 9 page 31) First edition.
Developed out of a motion picture deal made with Paramount, Gracie Allen is an odd, truncated book, much shorter than the earlier series entries. It violates the format of the series, using a title with more than six letters in the central name. As a result, the last tow words of the title appear superimposed over the yellow index card on the dust wrapper's front panel and spine. The book is bound in yellow cloth--the only Vance not bound in black--and it is stamped in black.
Condition: Previous owner's name to front end paper, few light blemishes. Dust jacket unclipped, minor shelf wear, light rubbing to edges, especially fold corners; darkening from old biding glue on endpapers else better than very good in a near fine jacket.

Synopsis
The Gracie Allen Murder Case (1938) (also published as The Scent of Murder) is the eleventh of twelve detective novels by S. S. Van Dine featuring his famous fictional detective of the 1920s and 1930s, Philo Vance. It also features the zany half of the George Burns & Gracie Allen comedy team. It is in some ways a roman à clef, including not just Burns & Allen but also such characters as Gracie's mother and brother.
