New York and Auburn: Miller, Orton, and Mulligan, 1856. Front cover and spine vignettes, lettered in gilt. Spine sunned to tan. Gilt remains vivid. Frontispiece portreaits of Millard Fillmore and A. Donelson, with tissue-guard. The illustrations are foxed. Several other full-page portraits through text, including one of the author at start of Chapter 1. Text is generally quite clean, sparse spots of foxing only. 565pp. The author (1815-1894) was an American political activist, pamphleteer, lobbyist. The criticized slavery in her writings. She was an advisor to Lincoln's presidential cabinet during the Civil War. This book, her magnum opus, criticizes the political influence of the Roman Catholic Church under the papacy of Pius IX. .
