About This Item
[McLOUGHLIN BROTHERS]. The Great American Menagerie. [NY, McLoughlin Brothers] (ca. 1895). 4to, [16]pp. Red cloth spine with color pictorial boards. One two-page and seven full-page color chromolithographs and smaller chromolithographs on all other pages. Edges worn, bottom inch-and-a-half of front cover somewhat stained, upper inch lightly so, some internal evidence of pages having stuck together at some point, as often happened with these books printed with such heavy color inks. Nonetheless, an internally clean, bright copy of this rare book.
Late 19th Century Circus Book. A wonder-filled picture book journey through a late 19th century circus, highlighted by beautifully printed chromolithographic plates showing the excitement and humor of a circus visit. A source we could not verify attributed this book's authorship to a William J. Rigney. Stunningly produced by the McLoughlin Brothers publishers, a pioneering firm in color printed children's books, this charming book opens a window into the entertainments enjoyed by children at the turn of the century, while also clearly representing the attitudes of the time towards other cultures.
