About This Item
George Book Publishing Co, 1899. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Type: Book 347 pp. (with advert.), prussian blue cloth bdg. with midnight blue, pale grey, kelly green design stamped on front board being an repeat of the frontispice illustration, midnight blue-stamped spine. Tissue-guarded b/w frontispice illus. on half-gloss paper plate. Early example of 'science fiction' literature, a futurist novel set in the 22nd century advocating equal distributing of money to citizens based on the nation's wealth. After revolutions spread worldwide, people have adapted to profound changes, for example the elimination of cities, due mainly to solving transportation problems. A suitably late progressive Victorian vision of the future, Merrill obviously shared self-taught historian Henry Thomas Buckle's positivist 'trial & error' philosophy of progress but also mixes in Libertarian and Socialist ideas. (scuffed and lightly soiled edges, tiny worn through spots at edges of spine, slightly bumped corners, few small stains edges boards, paper yellowed at edges, very clean and tight copy)Please contact us directly for a full description.
