About This Item
The 1866 edition copy of "The Great Metropolis - Phelps' New York City Guide. To all that can be seen and how to see it. With Street Directory" is a 70 page booklet that measures approximately 3 ¾ x 6 inches. It was written to be as all-encompassing as possible, and to meet the needs of both foreign and domestic visitors. The text is supplemented with 13 full-pages and 2 half-page illustrations. The Guide was published by Humphrey Phelps in New York.
To provide a sense of the scope and detail of the booklet, a number of copies of pages accompany this description. They show:
• a 2-page spread of the title page and a bird's eye view of New York
• U. S. Treasury Building, Wall Street
• Trinity Church
• The City Prison, called The Tombs
• The Cooper Institute
The condition of the string-bound booklet is compromised by its missing hard covers (although a bit of the spine remains) and the absence of its fold-out map of the city. Other than that, all items indicated in the Contents and Illustrations are in place. The pages have some tanning and occasional foxing, with staining on occasional pages. The overall condition of the item is fair.
