This was the first United States sponsored scientific exploring expedition to the Antarctic, Pacific islands and West coast. Lieutenant Charles Wilkes left Norfolk with six ships to explore and chart islands, which many of the fine survey charts were in use 100 years later. One of the concepts for the expedition was to determine if the earth really was hollow at with access at its poles. However, sailing to Antarctica only a frozen coastline was discovered and mapped. The vast cultural and scientific collections were part of the founding of the National Museum, the Naval Observatory and National Botanical Gardens. Congress commissioned a five volume book, with atlas of charts, by Wilkes on the expedition and many popular reprints were made.
