About This Item
[Waltham St Lawrence:] The Golden Cockerel Press,, 1952. First edition, limited issue, number 164 of 360 copies. This short romantic tale is the only novel written by the eminent theatre historian, playwright, and poet Phyllis Hartnoll (1906-1997). John Buckland Wright (1897-1954), a long-term collaborator with Christopher Sandford of the Golden Cockerel Press, supplied the illustrations. As was typical of Wright's art, most of the plates "depict partly clad or nude female figures, and show the engraver's delight - perhaps even obsession with - the lines and curves of a woman's body" (ODNB). Tall quarto. Original pink and grey-blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt fighting cockerel design to front board, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Aquatint frontispiece and 6 similar plates with tissue guards after John Buckland Wright, illustrated title page printed in pink, green, and black. A couple of small marks to boards. A near-fine copy. Cock-A-Hoop 189.
