About This Item

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1933. Very good in very good jacket.. First trade edition of the last collection of poems published within Faulkner's lifetime, in the Lynd Ward dust jacket in uncommonly good condition. Though the 54 poems of A GREEN BOUGH show the heavy imprint of Swinburne, Eliot and Housman, the traces of Faulkner are there beneath them, with the author's characteristic themes and preoccupations showing through his consciously elevated poetic manner: the measured lines of poem VI ("Man comes, man goes, and leaves behind / The bleaching bones that bore his lust") are the product of the same hand that wrote in SOLDIERS' PAY, "Sex and death: the front door and the back door of the world." 8.5'' x 6.25''. Original blind-stamped green cloth with gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($1.75) dust jacket with engraving by Lynd Ward. 67, [1] pages. Light offsetting to front and rear endpapers, some apparently from a non-archival sleeve (no longer present); light soil and wear to jacket. Most leaves unopened.
