About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co. Limited , 1910 A very good copy of the 1st trade edition in the original decorative cloth binding with tipped in colour frontispiece and 39 further colour plates by Warwick Goble. The binding is bright and clean. There is light scuffing to corners and spine joints, and there is pulling to the top and bottom of the spine. Page edges blue. There is the bookplate of Christopher Turnor to the front pastedown with the motto 'Turn nor Swerve'. Turnor (1873-1940) lived at Stoke Rochford Hall in Lincolnshire and was an architect, author and social reformer. The contents are complete and in very good clean condition. The plates are mounted on a thick brown card which has been tipped in to the book. Occasionally there is slight loss of the card surface onto the tissue guard in the gutter, and similarly slight loss of the text page surface in the gutter onto the card presumably where the book was opened more widely after sale. There is pale foxing to some text pages, which is more noticeable at the margins. Endpapers have some browning. 2 pp publisher's list at the rear. About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
