GRILLION'S CLUB: A CHRONICLE, 1812-1913 by Secretaries of the Grillion's Club (Compilers) - 1914

Oxford: Printed for the Club at the University Press, 1914. Edition limited to 200 copies. Bookplate of the great bibliophile and founder of the First Editions Club, A.J.A. Symons. Large bold ink signature, "Curzon 1914" (Earl Curzon of Kedleston, Viceroy to India and Chancellor of Oxford University). Quarto, pp. 112, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, 2 pages with tissue guards of facsimile signatures of the attendees at the 1913 dinner which Lord Curzon also attended and who's facsimile signature is also recorded. Half-vellum with gilt ruled blue cloth, gilt-stamped leather spine labels. Mild soiling to the covers, labels a bit worn, else near fine, tight, clean copy. The Club originated in 1812 and its meetings and annual dinners took place at the Grillion's Hotel. A letter written by Lord Derby contained this passage: 'The characteristic of our Club is, that the great majority being members of Parliament, and comprising, ... men of the most opposite politics, Grillion's has always been, in the utmost heat of Parties, and throughout the most keenly agitated Sessions, an absolutely neutral ground, and if the reminiscences of Grillion's were interleaved with Hansard's Debates I do not believe that any human being would believe in the fidelity of both reports.' .
