About This Item
London: Grant Richards, 1909. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. Exceedingly scarce first British edition and first edition in English, published by Grant Richards in 1909. Bleiler, Barron, Currey, etc. list the Mitchell Kennerley U. S. edition of 1911 as the first edition in English, though Currey has since changed his entry due to this copy surfacing. Blue cloth boards stamped in gold with a pictorial paper onlay of a man indeed in the grip of fear with his hands grabbing at his face and his eyes wide. Title page lists both Grant Richards and Mitchell Kennerley, and copyright page states "Copyright 1909 in the United States of America by Mitchell Kennerley." Perhaps the translation was copyrighted in 1909 by Kennerley, sold/used by Grant Richards in the UK, and then later published in the U.S.? Former ownership stamp of the Herringay and West Green Constitutional Club. Wear to edges of boards, corners, and spine. Binding fragile though holding quite well. Rear hinge starting. Worldcat locates four copies of this edition, all in British universities or libraries.
