About This Item
New York: the MacMillan Company, 1909. very good. 1st American Edition. xiv, 389, [7]pp. Octavo. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine. Head of antelope stamped in gilt to front board within double gilt oval. Light shelfwear and bumping to boards and corners. Bookplate on front pastedown. A very attractive clean copy. An attractive copy of the American first edition of this African hunting title by the author of the Man Eaters of Tsavo. Patterson was an Irish soldier, author, hunter and eventual game warden in East Africa. He was portrayed by Val Kilmer in the Academy Award winning film, the Ghost in the Darkness, a tale of man eating lions in Kenya. The book offered here gives accounts of Patterson's time in Africa, including a return to Tsavo, hunting for a variety of African Big Game, and interactions with the local Masai. A very interesting bookplate from the Bohemian Club on the front pastedown. This and Patterson's other classic, " Man-Eaters of Tsavo" are getting much scarcer especially in fine condition. 1909
