About This Item

n.p. [New York]: Self-published, 1995.

Laser-jet print on heavy card stock, one of 250 copies signed by New York artist Les Levine (b. 1935), advocating an end to group shows.

The print is accompanied by a signed statement on his stationery explaining his reason for opposing group shows, saying they exploit artists: "The artists are often told their works must be limited in size and of a certain medium and even worse conform to a specific subject matter. Artists are forced to fit in under fear of reprisal, to produce demeaning, unnatural and meaningless works of art."

Levine says the image of the print is inspired by cave paintings. "The cats...are a metaphor for the national obsession with aggressive group shows." He concludes: "Let's make the 90's a decade without group shows." SCARCE.

PHYSICAL DETAILS: Laser-jet print on heavy card stock, 8 1/2 x 11 inches (217 x 279 mm), #58 of 250 copies, signed and dated '95 by Les Levine. Accompanied by separate sheet, signed by Levine.

CONDITION: Minor soiling, light creasing to print. Near Fine. Separate statement: Fine.
