Double-signed copy of the deluxe edition First gift edition, first impression, signed by both author and illustrator on the title page, including an ink drawing of the mouse by Scheffler. The story won the Smarties Book Prize following publication in 1999. Quarto, pp. 25, [1]. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, arboreal gilt frame on front cover enclosing mounted colour plate of the Gruffalo, gilt vignette of the mouse on rear cover, illustrated endpapers. Housed in the original pictorial card slipcase with stickers issued by the publisher and Waterstones. Colour illustrations throughout. Spot of wear to fore edge of rear cover, occasional light finger-soiling. A near-fine copy.

Synopsis

The Gruffalo is a children's book by writer/playwright Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, telling the story of a mouse taking a stroll through a deep, dark wood. The book has sold over 10.5 million copies, has won several prizes for children's literature, and has been made into a West End and Broadway play.
