Boston: Haytian Bureau of Emigration, 1861. First edition of this classic work on Haiti. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece, folding map. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To William Monteith from his friend. James Redpath." In very good condition. We have never seen another signed and inscribed example. A description of the island, its society and government, published with the purpose of exhorting African Americans and anti slavery whites to move there. The Haitian government had endorsed Redpath, a white abolitionist, to act as representative in this endeavor. Blockson 2957; Sabin 68523 [The Geffard Edition].
