Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1948. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Octavo, 117pp. A fine, fresh copy in the publisher's grey cloth. In a near fine price-clipped dust jacket, with an area of scuffing (probably sticker removal) to the front panel, else quite nice. This copy SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the pioneering pollster on the front free endpaper to an influential professor of history at Stanford University, Thomas A. Bailey: "To Prof. T. A. Bailey with highest regards to one who has made intelligent use of polls. George Gallup." This was Gallup's first published book, and remains the scarcest of his books, whether signed or unsigned. The volume served as a kind of manifesto of data-driven, scientific approaches to understanding the American polity. Bailey was best known for his book published the same year, "The Man in the Street: The Impact of American Public Opinion on Foreign Policy." Naturally, Bailey and Gallup would have had much to discuss regarding the subject matter of Gallup's book.
