About This Item
Chester: Printed by T. Griffith, Grosvenor Street, 1830. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. FIRST EDITION, 1830. Hardcover. Boards are a thin cardboard, covered in brown paper bag like paper with black text and ornamented border. Spine is a darker brown with an off white label with black text. Written in both English and Welsh. Occasional small black and white illustrative engravings throughout. Contents include: First Day, Second Day, Third Day, Essays and Poems, and six appendices. vi, 178 pp.

EXCERPT FROM THE PREFACE: The month of September, of the year 1828, was a period peculiarly honorable to Gwynedd, and especially so to the Clwydian hills and vallies; and will be referred to by the sons of Cambria, with delight and exultation, as long as her language shall maintain its distinctive character, or minstrelsy and song retain their magical influence in elevating the soul to deeds of glory, stimulating our youth to the tender passions, in soothing the decrepitude of age, and in ministering comfort in the season of affliction. [...] The design of this publication is two fold; first, to place upon record, in a respectable form, the history of the proceedings connected with that interesting Congress; and secondly, to preserve and perpetuate the admirable compositions there produced -- the genuine effusions of the native Awen.

CONDITION: Shows overall shelf wear, light soiling and foxing throughout. Some pages are uncut at the head. Even still, this little book holds a special, magical feeling about it. Free from marginalia or annotation with the exception of a previous owner's name written at the top corner of the front flyleaf in blue ink, and an ex libre bookplate affixed to the pastedown, dated 1921. A lovely vintage gift for any lover of the Welsh language and poetry.

Additional photos available upon request. Full refund if not satisfied.
