Louisiana State University Press, 1996. Paperback. Fine. Softcovers. Fine..226 pp. with bibliography and index, illustrations and maps. Biography of Henry W. Hallack (1815-1872), Civil War officer and the man named general-in-chief of the Union army after McClellan was removes after the Peninsual Campaign. With a reputation as an expert in military studies, he was nicknamed "Old Brains", he usually not present at battles, leaving execution of the strategies to subordinates. As time went on, he gained a reputation of being too conservatve, favoring defensive tactics to attacks; Lincoln would come to call him "little more that a first rate clerk" and would replace him with Ulysses S. Grant.
