The first book on the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia, founded in 1868 just 7 years before this first edition, for the education of freed slaves, the book describes at length relations between freed slaves and northern whites. Wood engraved frontispiece is present but loose and has two folds lengthwise. Title page is also present but loose with perforated library stamp at top corner.
