About This Item
Philadelphia: Blanchard & Lea, 1851. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. With nearly 400 wood engravings in text. Full contemporary leather with spine label; minor dampstaining in outer margins toward the end, otherwise a very nice copy. First American edition. Though published nearly simultaneously as the English edition, the American publisher has made corrections of errors "which had escaped the author's attention...." Issued in five volumes, each was advertised as a complete lesson in itself. This series was lauded for providing a clear and simple yet thorough text which made it easily accessible to students of all backgrounds. Lardner treats properties of matter, force and motion, various theories of machinery, mechanical properties of liquid and air, gravity, sound and light.
Lardner (1793-1859) was an Irish-born University College professor and a prolific writer who is credited with helping to popularize science and technology in the nineteenth century. He wrote on diverse topics including astronomy, economics, natural philosophy, and electricity, and published the widely popular Cabinet Cyclopedia, a compilation of science articles by himself and others. He was a fellow of many scientific organizations, including the Royal Society of London, the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Linnean Society.
