About This Item

Felix Octavius Carr Darley illustration of the retreat at the first Battle of Bull Run, also known as the Battle of Manassas. George Virtue: New York. 1862. 6.5 x 10 inches. Hand-colored steel-plate engraved print. Lines are crisp and clear with colors bright and vivid. Illustrated print shows soldiers in battle on bridge, bodies crushed beneath their feet. A horse rears its head in the background as an American flag waves. One man rides a horse through the water while another lies partway on shore. A dramatic scene commemorating the first battle of the Civil War, a crushing defeat for the Union and early victory for the Confederate army.
