About This Item
London, Birn Brothers, (1887).. FIRST EDITION circa 1887 (dated from Cambridge copy), 4to, 270 x 194 mm, 10½ x 7½ inches, dark green cloth backed cream boards with pretty coloured illustration heightened with gilt, and gilt lettering, (26) pages. 12 very pretty chromolithograph plates of children in different activities: skating, at the sea side, playing at marbles, with the elephant at the fair, playing with kittens, sepia vignettes in the text. Large print for young children. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed, corners a bit worn with slight loss to surface paper at tips, endpapers slightly browned, contents bright and clean. A very good copy of an uncommon early title from the Birn Brothers, 1 copy only listed in UK libraries. Harding was married to painter Edward William Andrews and worked closely with T. H. Robinson. She illustrated several children's books (see Houfe 1981, page 331). Elizabeth Lecky was author of a few other children's books. WorldCat lists only 1 copy of our book other than the Cambridge copy.
