About This Item

London: MacDonald, 1969 For many years Pendlebury's Handbook, the only guide in English to the exciting discoveries of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos, has been unobtainable. This is a new and revised edition, with an Introduction by Sir John Myres and Sir John Forsdyke which sketches concisely and vividly the background of Minoan history, art and culture. Failing Sir Arthur Evans himself, the discoverer of these wonders, no one was better qualified to write of them than the man who was Curator of the Site from 1929 to 1934, and had already made im portant contributions to the archaeology of Crete. Like Ariadne's thread, his text guides the reader through the historical and architectural maze of this great Palace, tracing its growth from its foundation to the completion of the great complex of buildings in the fifteenth century B.C. and ending with a grand tour of the Palace and its dependencies (illustrated by many clear maps and plans). The most note worthy features of the excavations are shown in 14 pages of photographs of buildings and frescoes. On its publication the Handbook was acclaimed as a model of lucidity and charm. This revised edition is itself a memorial to the author. John Pendlebury laid down his life in May 1941 in the vicinity of the Palace. He died in defence of the Cretans whom he loved and understood as the heirs of a great tradition. --------------------------------------- 76 pages, foldout maps, b/w photographs and diagrams. ---------- Orders of $100.00 or more are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
