About This Item
New York: The Knickerbocker Press for G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1921. First edition, INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY, signed and inscribed by the editor at Yosemite Valley in May of 1923. With 27 black and white plates from photographs as well as handsome woodcut style illustrations on the introductory pages to the various sections, a fold-out map of the Yosemite region, a diagram within the text, and reproductions of Nation Park Service insignia. 8vo, in the publisher's handsome original forest green textured cloth, the upper cover with pictorial decoration of mountains, trees, and a river and lettering in white and black within a black ruled border, the lettered and decorated with a sequoia tree in black. xiii, 347 pp. A fine copy, especially for a handbook of this type, the green cloth is in exceptional state of preservation with no evidence of use or wear, the folding map also essentially as pristine, the text bright and clean, a touch of very minor spotting to the prelims only. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY, IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION AND INSCRIBED BY THE EDITOR/COMPILER TO A PROMINENT CALIFORNIA PHYSICIAN.
This very attractive and well illustrated handbook covers all aspects of Yosemite, one of America's greatest National Parks. There are chapters on the history of the region, the Native Americans of the area, the administration of the park and policies of the Park Service, geology, birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, fish, trees, and flowers. It also covers recreational opportunities within the park such as camping, mountaineering, motoring, and photography. The contributions are by Hall himself as well as several leading authorities of the period.
At the time of the presentation the recipient, Dr. Frank Lewis Doane of Red Bluff, CA,, was known for having one of the most modern and well equipped medical offices north of Sacramento.
