About This Item

Dallas, TX: McMurray's Bookshop, 1940. Soft cover. Very Good. Fanita Lanier. Handbound advertising piece from the historic McMurray's bookshop in Dallas. Cream-colored, thick paper wrappers, string bound, with single, folded sheet of advertising material inside. The wrappers measure 25 x 20cm, and the insert measures 21.5 x 14cm. Mounted on the front wrapper is a charcoal print, hand signed and titled "Great Kigndom," by New Mexico artist, Fanita Lanier, and dated in 1940. She has also signed on the interior of the front wrapper, as if the print were to be mounted there before the pamphlet was constructed. The advertising sheet is all written out by hand in a nice script, and mechanically duplicated on a thicker card stock. It advertises "four new books of unusual interest to Texans." There is a cover illustration and small blurb for each title, as follows: Hot Irons: Heraldry of the Range by Oren Arnold and John P. Hale; Texas: A Guide to the Lone Star State by the Federal Writers Project; Our Southwest by Erma Fergusson; and Saddle in the Sky: The Lone Star State by J. H. Plenn. There is some splitting to the bottom edge of the spine, some toning and light staining to wrappers, and chipping and edgewear. A wonderful and likely unique piece of Texas bookstore history.
