About This Item

Thomas Gray Memorial Trust, 1929. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. First edition. Hardback, black cloth covered boards with gilt titling to upper board. 24.5 × 18.5cm, 27pp. This work by Captain J S Commander was the prize-winning essay for a competition which ran in 1929. Entrants were required to write an essay on the following subject: "You are overtaken by a revolving storm. Discuss the handling of a low-powered steamer from the time of the first indication of the approach of the storm until the storm has passed, supposing the ship to be n (a) the safe semicircle, (b) dangerous semicircle, and (c) the direct path of the storm's centre." Commander's essays appears to be a comprehensive account of what to do with such a ship in such conditions... although the last line of the essay is that it would be best to avoid it! Condition: Good condition for age. There is some rubbing and fading to the boards and corners but the contents are in good condition with clean pages and secure binding.
