About This Item

New York, 1918. First Edition. Letter. Very good. The bearer, Mr. William A. Seibert of NY City served as a private under my command in B. Co. 7th infantry NYNY. He performed all duties required of him in a faithful and soldierly manner. He was prominent in athletics in which he proved himself self confident and game. He will in my opinion prove to be fearless and reliable in the performance of any duty assigned to him. I cheerfully recommend him. W. M. Halsted, Captain. B Co. 7th. Infantry N.Y.N.Y." Seibert saw service on the border and in training camp, is documented in the 1918 7th Regiment Gazette, Volume 33. After the Civil War, the 7th Regiment continued as a unit of the New York State National Guard. Known as the Silk Stocking or Blue Bloods regiment, part of the Union Army in the Civil War, it was noted for its military efficiency as well as the social status of its members. In 1917 the regiment was called into federal service and redesignated the 107th Infantry Regiment.
