About This Item
December 24, 1984. Very Good. The note, on Lillian Gish's personal stationary, reads, "Dear Jim and Steve: Here is the money for your new table. Hope it turns out to be just what you want and need. With much love at Christmas, and every day of 1985, and always. Yours grateful, Lillian." The letter was to James Frasher and his boyfriend. Frasher was Gish's manager and confidante. As a young man he had appeared in a few Western movies, most notably, as a supporting player to Gene Autry. Gish of course was one of the most illustrious of movie stars of the Silent Era, starring in "The Birth of a Nation", in 1915. With the advent of sound, she concentrated more on theater, but occasionally returned to the screen, most notably, in "Duel in the Sun", 1946, and "The Night of the Hunter", 1955. Her swan song, "The Whales of August", was released in 1987, over seventy years after her first appearance in movies. The second item on offer is a mounted photo of a middle aged Gish, with her writing around the edge in ink, "With every good wish, Lillian Gish". Finally, we include two photos, both mounted on a tall sheet, that were definitely personal, or non-publicity, photos of Gish. One, in black and white, shows her posing with her sister, Dorothy Gish, and The letter is folded and has minor wear.
