New York: James O'Kane, 1866. First American edition, title page dated 1866. Purplish brown cloth over beveled boards, gilt spine lettering and front cover decoration, four engraved plates including frontis, title page in black and red, 347 pages plus four pages (two leaves) of ads printed in black and red. Covers lightly rubbed with the spine ends expertly renewed in matching cloth, some minor wearthrough to corners, front hinge internally cracked but secure, text block sound, some speckling to endpapers, pages very clean and white, neatly written gift notation dated 1886 on front free endpaper, no other markings. The book is best known for its accurate depiction of Dutch life in the mid 19th century and includes the fictional episode of the boy who stuck his finger in a leaking dike and saved his town. It includes a climactic championship skating race which spurred popularity of speed skating which was not a well known sport at the time.. First US Edition. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
