About This Item

London: Geoffrey Cumberlege / OUP, 1951. 1st Edition 2nd Printing. Hardback. Fair. First edition, second impression. Hardback, bound in black cloth with gilt titling to spine. 23.5 × 16.5cm, liv + 1226pp. This copy belonged to British artist David Heathcote (b.1931), who after studying at the Slade School of Art, worked in Zimbabwe and Nigeria for twenty years, an experience that would contribute significantly to his creative vision. He notes that he bought this copy from E R Yeld (this was Evelyn Rachel Yeld, a sociologist who worked in Nigeria). A comprehensive dictionary of the Hausa language, from to Hausa to English, with a secondary smaller section of English/Hausa vocabulary. Hausa is a Chadic language spoken in Northern Nigeria and the surrounding countries. For example bara-gurbi are eggs left unhatched by a hen, a dankuri is the little finger, and kunya-kunya is a slight feeling of shame or modesty. Condition: A reference copy only. The black cloth binding is rubbed with fraying to the joints. The pages are tanned and foxed throughout, but this remains in readable condition. **PLEASE NOTE: As this is a heavy book, postage may have to be increased for overseas (non-UK) buyers, or decreased where appropriate. Please see the COX AND BUDGE BOOKS website for full shipping details or drop us an email**
