About This Item

New York City: The American Museum of Natural History, 1928. Octavo. [81]-392pp. illustrated. Volume XXIX, Part III. The Havasupai are a small and obscure group of Yuman-speaking Indians living in the neighborhood of the Grand Canyon in north central Arizona. Our earliest knowledge dates from their discovery in 1776 by Padre Francisco Garces. They were a very secluded tribe. Only brief descriptions of them came from those who traveled the Grand Canyon; Ives' party in 1858, Cous in 1881, and James and Curtis' party at various times. The author's first visit was in 1918 for a general ethnographic study. This volume focuses on the territory and linguistics, their economic life; agriculture, wild foot products hunting and preparation of food; manufactures such as basketry, pottery skin dressing, tools, etc. Also housing, dress and adornment, social relations, dances, religion, death customs, individual development, and historical tales. Bound in pale gray stiff paper wraps lettered in black, spine lettering by hand in ink, some chipping to wrapper edges, loss of some paper from spine, previous owner's name on front wrap, rear pocket with 1 folding map of camps in Cataract Canyon, 1 Relatives through Mother and relatives through father (2) copies.
